Hlatikulu, where resilience often grows in silence, one man has been steadily changing the course of young lives — not with grand gestures, but with quiet consistency, unwavering belief, and an unshakable commitment to purpose.
His name is Mlondi Mdluli — a founding member of PowerHouse Chess Club, a dedicated health professional, and a living embodiment of what it means to push beyond limits.
A Foundation Built on Vision
PowerHouse Chess Club was never just about chess — it was about opportunity, discipline, and the belief that young people could become more than their circumstances. Mlondi was there at the very beginning, not just helping to build the foundation, but defining the values that would carry the club forward.
While others saw a game, Mlondi saw a tool: for growth, for strategy, for life. He wasn’t only a player — he was a mentor, a guide, and a constant presence for every young mind who walked through the club’s doors.
The Second Behind the Strategy
Among PowerHouse’s most remarkable journeys is that of Simphiwe Dlamini, a two-time Olympiad player and one of Eswatini’s few Candidate Masters. But behind his high-level performances was a trusted partner working just as hard off the board — Mlondi Mdluli.
The two aren’t just friends or colleagues — they are co-founders of PowerHouse Chess Club, bonded by a shared vision and sharpened by hours of study, planning, and dreaming together. When Simphiwe represented Eswatini on the world stage, Mlondi was right there in the trenches, serving as his second.
It was Mlondi who helped refine openings, spot potential novelties, and build preparation strategies tailored for international opponents. He brought sharp analysis, psychological insight, and a calm confidence to the role, anchoring Simphiwe’s preparation with care and precision.
In chess, a second is more than a helper — they’re a co-strategist, a mirror, a stabilizer in pressure-filled moments. Mlondi played that role with quiet brilliance, and his contribution to Simphiwe’s success is woven into every move made on that global stage.
Leadership that Echoes Beyond the Board
Mlondi’s influence doesn’t end at PowerHouse. In 2024, the Eswatini chess community affirmed his leadership by electing him Chair of the Eswatini Chess League Committee — a testament not just to his skill, but to the respect he commands across the board.
He’s not just growing a club. He’s helping grow a national movement — proving that chess, when rooted in community, can be a force for empowerment and unity.

Scholar of the Struggle
Mlondi’s journey through education is a story of persistence over privilege. He started at Hlathikhulu Central Primary School, graduating with a second-class pass — far from flashy, but enough to keep going. At Christ the King High School, he leveled up, earning a first-class pass and catching the spark of ambition.
He rose further at Hlathikhulu Central High School, ranking among the top 50 students in the Class of 2015. Then came Ka-Boyce High School for his AS Level — and eventually, a Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from the University of Eswatini, where he graduated with a second-class upper division.
But for Mlondi, education was never about titles. It was about tools — and every subject he encountered, from parasitology to statistics, became a key to unlocking greater impact. That same hunger for knowledge led him to the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where he’s now pursuing a Master’s in Epidemiology — merging science with service in ways that could shape national health policy.
Healing Hands, Open Heart
Mlondi didn’t wait to “make it” before giving back. After graduating, he plunged straight into community health work — partnering with government and non-profit organizations to deliver care where it’s needed most.
Today, he works with research teams that aim to transform Eswatini’s public health landscape. His passion is no longer just about healing individuals — it’s about informing systems, influencing policy, and ensuring that the health of the nation reflects the dignity of its people.
Chess, Football, and Fellowship
Even as his professional journey soars, Mlondi remains grounded. You’ll find him coaching chess at PowerHouse or playing informal football matches in community tournaments — always using sports not just for recreation, but for connection.
He doesn’t see these as side projects. He sees them as lifelines — spaces where youth can belong, dream, and rise.
The Road Ahead: Building Hope
Mlondi knows that today’s youth face heavy storms — drugs, despair, disconnection. That’s why he’s committed to going even deeper in mentorship and community-building. To him, chess isn’t just a game; it’s a symbol of focus, of choices, of long-term thinking in a world that too often feels chaotic.
PowerHouse’s motto, “Push Beyond Limit,” is more than a slogan — it’s how Mlondi lives. Quietly. Consistently. Powerfully.
He doesn’t just make moves on the board. He makes moves in life, and the ripple effects are just beginning.
